Since mid-2010, our holding in Oldenburg has also been involved in supporting a non-profit initiative. The “Elterninitiative krebskranker Kinder e.V.“ (Parents of Children With Cancer) association aims to support the parents of children suffering from cancer and in cases of particular need to provide financial assistance. At the same time, efforts are being made to improve the outpatient and inpatient care of children and to promote research into leukaemia and tumour diseases. This takes place in close co-operation with Professor Müller, director of the Paediatric Oncology Department at the Oldenburg Hospital.
According to Professor Müller, children need to play in instances where adults would withdraw to think. This means problems are played out and solutions found as a result. In order to do that, however, children need “play areas”. There is already one such “play area” on Ward 262 at the hospital. Funds are nevertheless lacking to ensure that affected children and their parents can use this space effectively. The aim of the association and Professor Müller is to transform the room into a special recreation area for the patients and their families. The children should feel so happy there that their parents feel they too can take some time out.
In order to turn this room into such a place, sponsors are needed to provide the necessary funds for the project. Start-up financing ensured that the playroom was kitted out with new equipment relatively quickly. Our involvement then enabled the project to begin advertising for suitable staff to fill this playroom with life. Although the initial idea was to employ a kindergarten teacher for the supervision, thanks to our monthly contribution, the room is now to receive a therapeutic teacher. In addition to this monthly financial support for the newly-created post, which is to run initially for two years, we also made a one-off donation to the association for equipping the room.
